Hussein Chalayan has done something remarkable. Instead of pushing fashion onto the world, he's built the world into fashion--the face of the earth onto fabric--for his strongest show ever for cashmere company TSE.
Chalayan, who's of Turkish descent, presented his placid fall collection without any hoopla, as usual, and called it simply Countries. It consisted of silk "map print" skirts with a single meandering embroidered thread, boiled cashmere "map print" sweaters, intarsia "aerial view" knit dresses and large geometric color blocks representing neighboring countries and the borders between them.
This is Chalayan's moment, as he's been named Designer of the Year in the British Fashion Awards two years straight and some say he's likely to fill the void left by Jil Sander. - written by Lee Carter Mar 2000
